  • Opal: Mineral or Mineraloid? Understanding Opal's Classification
Opal is generally not referred to as a mineraloid but is in fact considered a mineral by most geologists and mineralogists.

It has an amorphous internal structure rather than a crystalline one like traditional minerals, but this characteristic alone doesn't disqualify it from being classified as a mineral, as there are other minerals (like obsidian) that also lack definite atomic patterns.

Mineraloids refer to substances that may have the form and composition similar to mineral crystals but lack a definitive chemical compound composition, internal ordering typical of crystalline minerals, and aren't naturally formed through geological processes (such as coal, pearl or tektites - natural or artificial glasses found after meteor/asteroid impacts).
