  • The Composition of Galaxies: Stars, Gas, and Dark Matter
Galaxies are made up of three main components:

    1. Stars: These are the most prominent and visible component of galaxies. They are giant balls of hot gas that generate light and heat through nuclear fusion.

    2. Gas and Dust: Galaxies are filled with vast clouds of gas (primarily hydrogen and helium) and dust. This material provides the raw ingredients for star formation and also absorbs and scatters light, creating the characteristic dusty appearance of some galaxies.

    3. Dark Matter: This mysterious and invisible substance is believed to make up the majority of the mass of galaxies. We can't see it directly, but its gravitational influence is evident in the way galaxies rotate and interact with each other.

While these three components are the most important, galaxies also contain other elements like planets, black holes, and neutron stars.
