    2. Refrigeration Systems: Refrigerants used in traditional air conditioners and refrigerators have been a major source of ozone depletion and global warming. This has led to the development of:

    * Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs): Initially seen as a replacement for ozone-depleting CFCs, HFCs are now being phased out due to their potent greenhouse gas effects.

    * Natural Refrigerants: Many modern systems are now using natural refrigerants like hydrocarbons (propane, butane) and CO2, which have much lower environmental impacts.

    * Energy-Efficient Designs: Refrigerators and air conditioners are becoming more energy-efficient, using less electricity and reducing their overall environmental footprint.

    These are just two examples, and the field of mechanical engineering is constantly evolving to create more sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions.
