  • Urban Mind: Tracking City Environments & Well-being with a Smartphone App
Smartphone App Could Reveal How Urban Spaces Affect Our Health and Wellbeing

A new smartphone app could help researchers understand how urban spaces affect our health and wellbeing. The app, called Urban Mind, will collect data on participants' physical activity, sleep, stress levels, and mood as they move around different parts of their city.

The app was developed by a team of researchers at the University of Melbourne. They say that Urban Mind is the first app to collect data on such a wide range of health and wellbeing indicators in relation to urban environments.

"We know that the places we live in can have a big impact on our health and wellbeing," said Dr. Mardie Townsend, one of the researchers who developed the app. "But we don't always know exactly how these places affect us, or what aspects of them are most important."

Urban Mind will collect data on participants' physical activity, sleep, stress levels, and mood as they move around different parts of their city. The app will also collect data on the participants' surroundings, such as the amount of green space, traffic noise, and air pollution.

The researchers hope that Urban Mind will help them to identify the features of urban environments that are most important for health and wellbeing. This information could then be used to design healthier cities.

"We want to create cities that are healthy and enjoyable places to live," said Dr. Townsend. "Urban Mind will help us to understand what makes a city healthy, so that we can design cities that promote health and wellbeing."

The Urban Mind app is available for free on the App Store and Google Play.
