    Evaporation

    Evaporation is the natural phase transition from liquid to vapor that occurs at the surface of a liquid when molecules acquire sufficient kinetic energy from surrounding heat. The resulting vapor pressure is lower than the ambient atmospheric pressure, enabling molecules to escape into the air. Condensation is the reverse process, where vapor cools and reverts to liquid.

    Common Evaporation Examples

    1. Sweating: During physical activity or heat exposure, sweat on the skin evaporates, dissipating heat and cooling the body. 2. The Hydrologic Cycle: Surface water evaporates into the atmosphere, cools to form clouds, and eventually precipitates as rain, completing the cycle.

    Distillation

    Distillation is a laboratory and industrial technique that separates liquid mixtures by heating them to vaporize components with lower boiling points. The vapor is then condensed back into liquid, allowing for collection of distinct fractions. Unlike spontaneous evaporation, distillation requires a controlled temperature and often a pressure differential to facilitate bubble formation throughout the liquid.

    Practical Distillation Applications

    1. Desalination: Seawater is heated to produce vapor, leaving salts behind; the vapor condenses into fresh water. 2. Fuel Refining: Crude oil is fractionated by distillation, separating gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and other products based on boiling ranges. 3. Alcohol Production: Spirits are distilled to concentrate ethanol, separating it from water and impurities.
