  • Understanding Fluids: Composition, Properties, and Types
Fluids are made up of molecules that are able to flow and change shape. They are generally classified as either:

    Liquids:

    * Have a definite volume but no definite shape. They take the shape of their container.

    * Molecules are closely packed but can move around each other. This allows them to flow.

    * Examples: water, oil, honey, blood.

    Gases:

    * Have no definite volume or shape. They expand to fill their container.

    * Molecules are far apart and move freely. This allows them to expand and compress.

    * Examples: air, oxygen, carbon dioxide, helium.

    Composition of Fluids:

The exact composition of a fluid depends on its specific type. Here are some examples:

    * Water: Made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms bonded together as H₂O molecules.

    * Air: A mixture of gases, primarily nitrogen (N₂) and oxygen (O₂).

    * Blood: A complex fluid containing plasma (water, proteins, electrolytes), red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

    Important Note:

    * Fluids are not always made of just one type of molecule. They can be mixtures of different substances, such as solutions or suspensions.

    * The properties of a fluid depend on the interactions between its molecules. For example, the viscosity of a liquid is determined by how strongly its molecules attract each other.
