  • Formic Acid Explained: Is Ant Spray Acidic or Alkaline?
Ants don't squirt acid or alkali. They squirt formic acid, which is a weak acid.

    Here's why:

    * Formic acid is a naturally occurring organic compound.

    * It's classified as a carboxylic acid, meaning it contains a carboxyl group (-COOH).

    * Acids are substances that release hydrogen ions (H+) in solution, making the solution more acidic.

    * Alkali refers to a basic substance, which is the opposite of an acid.

While formic acid is an acid, it's considered a weak acid. This means it doesn't release a large amount of hydrogen ions in solution, and therefore, it's not as corrosive or harmful as strong acids like hydrochloric acid.
