  • Saturated Solutions: Definition, Characteristics & Examples
When the maximum amount of solid is dissolved in a solvent, the solution is called a saturated solution.

    Here's why:

    * Saturated Solution: A solution that holds the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve at a given temperature and pressure. Any additional solute added will simply settle to the bottom.

    * Unsaturated Solution: A solution that can still dissolve more solute at a given temperature and pressure.

    * Supersaturated Solution: A solution that holds more solute than it normally should at a given temperature and pressure. These solutions are unstable and any disturbance can cause the excess solute to crystallize out.
