  • Understanding Chemical Subscripts: Counting Atoms in Molecules
    The type of number after a chemical symbol that tells how many atoms of that element are in a single molecule is called a subscript.

    For example, in the chemical formula H₂O (water), the subscript "2" after the symbol "H" tells us that there are two hydrogen atoms in each water molecule.
