  • Photosynthesis: Essential Inputs - Carbon Dioxide, Water & Sunlight
The starting substances in photosynthesis are:

    * Carbon dioxide (CO2): This is the source of carbon atoms used to build sugars.

    * Water (H2O): This provides the hydrogen atoms and electrons needed for the process.

    * Sunlight: This provides the energy to drive the chemical reactions of photosynthesis.

These substances are combined in a series of reactions to produce glucose (a sugar) and oxygen (O2) as byproducts.
