Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells. It contains iron, which binds to oxygen molecules in the lungs and carries them throughout the body to the tissues. When hemoglobin releases the oxygen, it picks up carbon dioxide from the tissues and carries it back to the lungs to be exhaled.
