  • Understanding Atomic Nucleus: Protons and Neutrons
The basic particles found in the nucleus of an atom are:

    * Protons: Positively charged particles that determine the element of the atom. The number of protons in an atom is called the atomic number.

    * Neutrons: Neutrally charged particles that contribute to the mass of the atom. The number of neutrons can vary within an element, resulting in isotopes.

Together, protons and neutrons make up the majority of the atom's mass and are located in the nucleus.
