  • Understanding Electrically Neutral Atoms: Protons & Electrons
    An atom that has an equal number of protons and electrons is considered electrically neutral. This is the natural state of most atoms.

    Here's why:

    * Protons: Positively charged particles located in the nucleus of an atom.

    * Electrons: Negatively charged particles orbiting the nucleus.

    * Neutral Charge: The positive charges of protons and the negative charges of electrons balance each other out, resulting in a neutral atom.

    Example: A carbon atom has 6 protons and 6 electrons, making it electrically neutral.

    Note: An atom can become an ion if it gains or loses electrons, resulting in a net positive or negative charge.
