  • Uranium-235: The Key Radioactive Element in Nuclear Fuel
The most common radioactive element used in nuclear fuel is Uranium.

Specifically, it's the isotope Uranium-235 (U-235) that is fissile, meaning it can undergo nuclear fission. This fission reaction releases a tremendous amount of energy, which is harnessed to generate electricity in nuclear power plants.

While Uranium-238 is more abundant in nature, it's not fissile but can be converted into Plutonium-239, which is also used as nuclear fuel.
