    The subatomic particle that determines the properties of an element is the proton.

    Here's why:

    * Atomic Number: The number of protons in an atom's nucleus defines its atomic number. This number is unique to each element and is the basis for its placement on the periodic table.

    * Chemical Identity: The number of protons dictates the element's identity. For example, all atoms with one proton are hydrogen, all atoms with six protons are carbon, and so on.

    * Chemical Reactivity: The number of protons, along with the arrangement of electrons (which is influenced by the protons), governs how an atom will interact with other atoms. This determines its chemical reactivity and the types of chemical bonds it can form.

    While neutrons contribute to the atom's mass and isotopes, they do not change the element's fundamental identity or chemical properties. Electrons play a crucial role in chemical bonding and reactions, but their number can vary (forming ions) without changing the element's identity.
