  • Carl Wilhelm Scheele and the Discovery of Chlorine: A Chemical History
Chlorine was not "invented" in the sense of being created, as it's a naturally occurring element. However, the discovery of chlorine is credited to Carl Wilhelm Scheele, a Swedish chemist, in 1774.

He isolated the element by reacting hydrochloric acid with manganese dioxide. Initially, he thought it was a compound containing oxygen, but later it was proven to be an element.
