Comets are icy bodies that orbit the Sun. They are made up of a nucleus of dust and rock particles mixed with frozen gases like water, methane, and ammonia. When a comet gets close to the Sun, the ice starts to melt and vaporize, creating a bright coma (a cloud of gas and dust) around the nucleus. This vaporization also creates the comet's tail, which stretches away from the Sun.
