  • Oxides: Understanding Compounds Formed by Burning
The general name given to compounds formed when elements burn in oxygen is oxides.

    Here's why:

    * Oxidation is a chemical process involving the loss of electrons.

    * When an element burns in oxygen, it reacts with oxygen atoms, losing electrons and forming a new compound.

    * This new compound is formed by the combination of the element with oxygen, and is therefore classified as an oxide.

    For example:

    * Sodium (Na) burns in oxygen to form sodium oxide (Na2O).

    * Carbon (C) burns in oxygen to form carbon dioxide (CO2).

    * Iron (Fe) reacts with oxygen to form iron oxide (Fe2O3), commonly known as rust.
