  • Benzene Solubility: Hexane vs. Glycerol - Chemical Principles Explained
    Benzene is more soluble in hexane than glycerol. Here's why:

    * Like dissolves like: This principle states that substances with similar molecular structures and polarities are more likely to dissolve in each other.

    * Benzene and hexane: Both benzene and hexane are nonpolar hydrocarbons. They have similar structures and weak intermolecular forces (van der Waals forces).

    * Glycerol: Glycerol is a polar molecule with three hydroxyl groups (-OH). These hydroxyl groups form strong hydrogen bonds, making glycerol a highly polar molecule.

    Since benzene and hexane are both nonpolar, they readily dissolve in each other. Glycerol, being polar, is not attracted to the nonpolar environment of benzene or hexane, and therefore, it is not soluble in them.

    In short, benzene's solubility in hexane is driven by the principle of "like dissolves like."
