  • Carbonated Drinks: Solution or Compound? Understanding the Chemistry
A carbonated soft drink is a solution. Here's why:

    * Solution: A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.

    * Compound: A compound is a substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically bonded together.

    In a carbonated soft drink:

    * Solvent: The primary component is water (H₂O).

    * Solutes: Various solutes are dissolved in the water, including sugar, flavorings, and carbon dioxide (CO₂).

The carbon dioxide dissolves in the water to create carbonic acid (H₂CO₃), which gives the drink its fizz. This is a chemical reaction, but the dissolved CO₂ and the other components don't form a new compound. They remain distinct substances, making the soft drink a solution.
