  • Oxygen: Neutral Atom vs. Ion - Understanding Chemical Properties
Oxygen, in its most common form, is a neutral atom.

    Here's why:

    * Neutral atoms have an equal number of protons (positively charged particles) and electrons (negatively charged particles).

    * Oxygen has 8 protons and 8 electrons. This balance makes it electrically neutral.

However, oxygen can become an ion under certain circumstances:

    * Anion: Oxygen can gain two electrons, becoming a negatively charged ion called oxide ion (O2-).

    * Cation: While less common, oxygen can lose electrons under extreme conditions to form a positively charged ion.

So, in its most common form, oxygen is a neutral atom. However, it can form ions depending on the specific chemical environment.
