  • Methane and Chlorine Reaction: Products & Chemical Equation
The two main products of the reaction between methane (CH4) and chlorine (Cl2) are chloromethane (CH3Cl) and hydrogen chloride (HCl). This reaction is a substitution reaction where a chlorine atom replaces a hydrogen atom in the methane molecule.

Here is the balanced chemical equation for the reaction:

    CH4 + Cl2 → CH3Cl + HCl

The reaction can continue further, replacing additional hydrogen atoms with chlorine atoms to produce dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), chloroform (CHCl3), and finally carbon tetrachloride (CCl4).
