    Iodine dissolved in tetrachloromethane (carbon tetrachloride, CCl4) forms a violet solution.

    Here's why:

    * Iodine (I2) is a nonpolar molecule.

    * Tetrachloromethane (CCl4) is also a nonpolar solvent.

    * Like dissolves like: Nonpolar substances dissolve well in nonpolar solvents due to similar intermolecular forces.

    This solution is often used in spectroscopic analysis because:

    * Iodine's color in CCl4 is very distinct. This allows for easy visual identification and quantitative analysis.

    * CCl4 is transparent to visible light. This allows for accurate measurement of the light absorbed by iodine.

    Important Note: Tetrachloromethane is a toxic and carcinogenic compound. It should be handled with extreme caution and used in well-ventilated areas.
