  • Water (H2O): Is It a Metal or Nonmetal? Understanding Chemical Properties
H2O is not a metal. It is a compound made up of the elements hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O), both of which are nonmetals.

    Here's why:

    * Metals are typically shiny, malleable, ductile, and good conductors of heat and electricity. They often form cations (positively charged ions).

    * Nonmetals are generally dull, brittle, poor conductors of heat and electricity, and tend to form anions (negatively charged ions).

H2O (water) is a liquid at room temperature, transparent, and a good solvent. It does not exhibit the characteristics of metals.
