  • Neutral Atoms: Protons & Electrons - Understanding Atomic Charge
An electrically neutral atom will have equal numbers of protons and electrons.

    Here's why:

    * Protons are positively charged particles located in the nucleus of an atom.

    * Electrons are negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus.

    * Neutrality means there is no overall charge.

Since protons are positive and electrons are negative, to be neutral, there must be an equal number of each to cancel out their charges.
