  • Hydrogen Group: Understanding Hydrogen's Place in the Periodic Table
Hydrogen is in Group 1 of the periodic table, also known as the alkali metals.

However, it's important to note that hydrogen is a unique element. While it shares some properties with alkali metals, like forming a +1 cation, it's also distinct in many ways.

    * Gaseous at room temperature: Unlike alkali metals, which are solid, hydrogen exists as a gas.

    * Non-metallic: Hydrogen is a non-metal, whereas alkali metals are metals.

    * Forms covalent bonds: Hydrogen typically forms covalent bonds, unlike alkali metals which form ionic bonds.

Because of its unique characteristics, hydrogen is often placed above Group 1 in the periodic table, but separated from it.
