  • Understanding the Atom Nucleus: Protons and Neutrons
The nucleus of an atom contains two types of subatomic particles:

    * Protons: Positively charged particles that determine the element of the atom. The number of protons in an atom is called its atomic number.

    * Neutrons: Neutrally charged particles that contribute to the atom's mass.

Together, protons and neutrons make up almost the entire mass of an atom.
