  • Understanding the Atom's Nucleus: Protons and Neutrons
The center of an atom is called the nucleus. The nucleus contains two types of subatomic particles:

    * Protons: These particles have a positive electrical charge.

    * Neutrons: These particles have no electrical charge (they are neutral).

The number of protons in an atom determines what element it is. For example, all carbon atoms have 6 protons, all oxygen atoms have 8 protons, and so on.
