  • Understanding Molecules: The Basic Building Blocks of Compounds
The simplest possible unit of a compound is a molecule.

    Here's why:

    * Compound: A substance made up of two or more different elements chemically bonded together.

    * Molecule: The smallest unit of a compound that retains the chemical properties of that compound.

For example, water (H₂O) is a compound made of hydrogen and oxygen. The smallest unit of water that still exhibits the properties of water is a single water molecule, containing two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom bonded together.
