  • Solute and Solvent in Air: Understanding Gas Mixtures
    In air, the solvent is nitrogen (N2), and the solutes are the other gases present, including:

    * Oxygen (O2)

    * Argon (Ar)

    * Carbon dioxide (CO2)

    * Other trace gases

    Here's why:

    * Solvent: The solvent is the component of a solution that dissolves the other components. In air, nitrogen makes up the largest percentage (around 78%) and acts as the dissolving medium for the other gases.

    * Solutes: Solutes are the components that dissolve in the solvent. In air, the other gases present, like oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide, are dissolved in the nitrogen.

    So, while air is a mixture and not a true chemical solution, it's useful to think of it in terms of a solvent and solutes to understand the interactions between its components.
