  • Sodium Fluoride (NaF): Metal or Nonmetal Compound?
    NaF is not a metal. It is an ionic compound. Here's why:

    * Na (Sodium) is a metal.

    * F (Fluorine) is a non-metal.

    When metals and non-metals bond, they form ionic compounds. In NaF, sodium loses an electron to become a positively charged ion (Na+), and fluorine gains an electron to become a negatively charged ion (F-). These oppositely charged ions attract each other, forming a strong ionic bond.
