  • Solvent vs. Solute: Understanding Solution Components
The bulk liquid of a solution is typically called the solvent.

    Here's why:

    * Solvent: The component of a solution that is present in the larger amount and dissolves the other component(s). It's usually the liquid in which the solute dissolves.

    * Solute: The component of a solution that is present in the smaller amount and dissolves into the solvent.

Example: In a sugar-water solution, water is the solvent (bulk liquid) and sugar is the solute.

However, it's important to remember that solutions can be in different phases:

    * Solid solutions: For example, alloys are solid solutions where a metal is dissolved in another.

    * Gaseous solutions: For example, air is a gaseous solution where gases like nitrogen and oxygen are dissolved in each other.

So, while "solvent" is the most common term for the bulk liquid, it's important to consider the specific context of the solution.
