  • Cyclohexane: Polar or Nonpolar Solvent? Properties & Explanation
    Cyclohexane is a nonpolar solvent.

    Here's why:

    * Structure: Cyclohexane is a cyclic hydrocarbon with a symmetrical structure. The carbon-hydrogen bonds are nonpolar, and the symmetrical arrangement of these bonds cancels out any potential dipole moment.

    * Polarity: Polar solvents have a significant difference in electronegativity between the atoms in their molecules, leading to a permanent dipole moment. Nonpolar solvents have little or no difference in electronegativity, resulting in no or very small dipole moments.

Since cyclohexane has no permanent dipole moment, it is considered a nonpolar solvent. This means it is good at dissolving nonpolar substances like fats, oils, and waxes.
