Here's why:
* Fluorescent lamps (tube lights) use mercury vapor in a low-pressure environment. This vapor, when excited by electricity, emits ultraviolet light.
* The ultraviolet light then strikes a phosphor coating on the inside of the tube, causing it to fluoresce and emit visible light.
* Mercury is a highly toxic heavy metal. It can cause serious health problems if inhaled or ingested.
Important Note:
* Dispose of tube lights properly. Do not throw them in regular trash. Many communities have specific recycling programs for fluorescent lamps.
* If a tube light breaks, ventilate the area well and avoid direct contact with the broken glass and mercury. Use a stiff piece of cardboard or paper to pick up the broken pieces and dispose of them properly.
Be mindful of the hazards associated with mercury and handle tube lights with care.
