  • Sand and Water Mixture: Understanding Suspensions & Settling
When sand is mixed with water, you form a suspension. Here's why:

    * Suspension: A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture where particles of one substance are dispersed throughout another but are not dissolved.

    * Sand and Water: Sand particles are much larger than water molecules and don't dissolve in water. They simply remain suspended in the water, making the mixture cloudy.

    * Settling: Over time, the sand particles will settle to the bottom of the container due to gravity. This is a key characteristic of suspensions.

    Other important points:

    * Stirring: Stirring the mixture will temporarily keep the sand particles dispersed, but they'll settle again when you stop.

    * Filtering: You can easily separate sand from water by using a filter, as the sand particles are too large to pass through the filter paper.
