  • Solutions: Definition, Characteristics & Components - A Comprehensive Guide

    What is a Solution?

A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. This means that the substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture, and you can't distinguish the individual components.

    Key characteristics of a solution:

    * Homogeneous: The mixture has a uniform composition and appearance throughout.

    * Stable: The components of the solution won't settle out over time.

    * Transparent: Solutions usually allow light to pass through them.

2 Basic Parts of a Solution:

    1. Solute: The substance that dissolves in the other substance. It is usually present in a smaller amount compared to the solvent.

    2. Solvent: The substance that dissolves the solute. It is usually present in a larger amount compared to the solute.

    Example:

    * Sugar water: Sugar is the solute, and water is the solvent.

    Important Note:

The terms "solute" and "solvent" are relative. In some cases, it might be difficult to distinguish between the two. For example, in a solution of alcohol and water, either substance can act as the solute or solvent depending on their relative amounts.
