  • Why Does Ice Float? Exploring Density and Solids vs. Liquids
The classic example of a solid less dense than its liquid form is ice.

    Here's why:

    * Water molecules in ice: In ice, water molecules form a crystalline structure with lots of empty space between them.

    * Water molecules in liquid water: In liquid water, the molecules are more closely packed together, making the liquid denser.

    This is why ice floats!
