    The written notation used to represent the number of atoms of each element in a compound is called a subscript.

    For example, in the chemical formula H₂O (water):

    * The subscript "2" after the "H" indicates that there are two hydrogen atoms in each water molecule.

    * The subscript "1" (which is usually omitted) after the "O" indicates that there is one oxygen atom in each water molecule.
