  • Carbon Dioxide in a Balloon: Physical Change or Chemical Change? Explained
Filling a balloon with carbon dioxide is a physical change, not a chemical change. Here's why:

    * Physical Change: Involves a change in the form or appearance of a substance, but not its chemical composition.

    * Chemical Change: Involves the formation of new substances with different chemical properties.

In the case of a carbon dioxide filled balloon:

    * The carbon dioxide remains the same chemical compound (CO2) whether it's in a tank or inside the balloon.

    * The only change is the physical state of the CO2 (from compressed gas to a gas filling the balloon).

    To illustrate the difference:

    * Chemical change: Burning a piece of wood (wood changes into ash, smoke, and gases).

    * Physical change: Cutting a piece of wood (the wood is still wood, just in smaller pieces).
