  • Baking Soda and Water: Understanding pH - Acid, Base, or Neutral?
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) mixed with distilled water creates a basic solution. Here's why:

    * Baking soda (NaHCO3) is a base. It can accept hydrogen ions (H+) from water molecules.

    * Distilled water (H2O) is neutral. It has a pH of 7.

    * When baking soda dissolves in water, it forms a bicarbonate ion (HCO3-) and a sodium ion (Na+) This bicarbonate ion can react with water to produce hydroxide ions (OH-), which are responsible for the basic nature of the solution.

In simpler terms: Baking soda makes the water more basic, increasing its pH above 7.
