  • Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS): Causes & Examples
The term for gases produced by aerosols and manufacturing that destroy Earth's ozone layer is Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS).

Some common examples of ODS include:

    * Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): These were widely used in refrigerants, aerosols, and cleaning agents.

    * Halons: These were used in fire extinguishers.

    * Methyl bromide: This was used as a fumigant to control pests.

    * Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs): These were used as substitutes for CFCs but also contribute to ozone depletion.

The Montreal Protocol, an international treaty signed in 1987, has successfully phased out the production and consumption of most ODS, leading to significant recovery of the ozone layer.
