  • Vitamin D Production in Skin: How Sunlight Powers Your Health
The vitamin manufactured in the skin is vitamin D.

    Here's how it works:

    * Sunlight Exposure: When your skin is exposed to sunlight, a precursor molecule called 7-dehydrocholesterol is converted into vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).

    * Liver and Kidney: Vitamin D3 then travels to the liver where it's converted into calcifediol. Finally, it goes to the kidneys, where it's further converted into the active form, calcitriol.

    * Calcium Absorption: Calcitriol plays a crucial role in regulating calcium absorption from the gut, which is essential for bone health, muscle function, and overall well-being.

Note: While vitamin D is produced in the skin, it's important to remember that you can also obtain it from certain foods (like fatty fish, egg yolks, fortified milk) and supplements.
