  • Oxygen: Element or Compound? Understanding its Nature
    Oxygen is an element.

    Here's why:

    * Element: A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Oxygen exists as a single type of atom.

    * Mixture: A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded.

    * Compound: A substance formed when two or more elements chemically combine in a fixed ratio.

Since oxygen is made up of only oxygen atoms, it fits the definition of an element.
