  • Understanding Atomic Charge: What Happens When an Atom Loses an Electron?
An atom that has lost an electron will have a positive charge. Here's why:

    * Atoms are normally neutral: Atoms have an equal number of protons (positively charged particles) and electrons (negatively charged particles). This balance results in a neutral overall charge.

    * Losing an electron disrupts the balance: When an atom loses an electron, it has more protons than electrons. Since protons are positively charged, the atom now has a net positive charge.

This positively charged atom is called a cation.
