  • Mineral Turpentine: Production, Properties & Safety
    Mineral turpentine is not an oil, it is a solvent made by the distillation of petroleum or coal tar. This distillate contains a variety of hydrocarbons including pinene, camphene and limonene. It should not be confused with gum turpentine, which is a volatile essential oil distilled from the resin of pine trees.

    Here are the steps on how to make mineral turpentine oil:

    Materials:

    * Petroleum or coal tar

    * Distillation apparatus (a still)

    * Condenser

    * Receiver

    Procedure:

    1. Place the petroleum or coal tar in the still.

    2. Heat the still until the tar begins to boil.

    3. The vapors from the boiling tar will rise up into the condenser.

    4. The condenser will cool the vapors and cause them to condense into a liquid.

    5. The condensed liquid will collect in the receiver.

    6. This condensed liquid is mineral turpentine oil.

    Note: Mineral turpentine oil is a flammable liquid and should be handled with care. It is also important to work in a well-ventilated area when making mineral turpentine oil.
