Chlorates are inorganic compounds containing the chlorate ion, ClO−3. They are typically salts of chloric acid, HClO3. Chlorates are strong oxidizing agents and can be used as bleaching agents, disinfectants, and weed killers. Chlorates can be produced by the electrolysis of chloride solutions or by the reaction of chlorine gas with alkali metal hydroxides.
