The liquid that is taken up in photosynthesis is water. Water is split into hydrogen and oxygen atoms by the energy from the sun. The hydrogen atoms are then used to reduce carbon dioxide into glucose, which is the energy source for the plant. The oxygen atoms are released into the atmosphere.
