  • Electrolysis of Copper: Identifying the Blue Precipitate
The blue stuff left in solution is copper hydroxide, Cu(OH)2. This is because during electrolysis, the copper electrode is oxidized to form copper ions, Cu2+, which then react with the hydroxide ions, OH-, in the solution to form copper hydroxide. The copper hydroxide is a blue precipitate that is insoluble in water.
