  • Acid-Base Neutralization: Products and Reactions Explained
If you combine an acid and a base (alkali), the resulting solution is usually a salt and water. This process is called neutralization. For example, when hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) are mixed, the products are sodium chloride (NaCl) and water (H2O). The chemical equation for this reaction is:

    HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O

In general, the products of an acid-base reaction depend on the specific acid and base involved. However, the overall reaction is always the same: an acid and a base react to form a salt and water.
