  • Silver Chloride Precipitation Reaction: NaCl + AgNO3
When aqueous solutions of table salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) are mixed, a solid forms. This solid is silver chloride (AgCl). The reaction that takes place can be represented as follows:

    NaCl(aq) + AgNO3(aq) → AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq)

In this reaction, the sodium and chloride ions from the sodium chloride solution react with the silver and nitrate ions from the silver nitrate solution to form silver chloride, which is a white, insoluble solid. The sodium nitrate produced as a byproduct remains dissolved in the solution.
